Age requirement and Kindergarten readiness

Setting up your child for success. Starting kindergarten is more than just an age calculation.  Please review the information provided by the Bayside City Council about kinder readiness.  Is your child ready for kindergarten?

Children enrolling for a 3-year-old program must turn 3 by the 30 April of the year they attend. Due to staff:child ratio regulations based on age, children must be three years of age before commencing the program. For example, if your child turns three on April 15th, then they can commence kindergarten on April 15th, not before.

Children enrolling for a 4-year-old program must turn 4 by the 30 April of the year they attend.

  • Enrol for 2024 – Turn 4 on or before 30 April 2024
  • Enrol for 2025 – Turn 4 on or before 30 April 2025

Please note that is no longer possible to repeat 3 year old kindergarten and 4 year old kindergarten can only be repeated in exceptional circumstances when the Early Childhood Teacher identifies 2 areas of development that require improvement before the child can transition to school.
